By far the best way to make rapid progress in any language is to live it, or be immersed in it. Language immersion weekends at Penobscot School provide a safe, relaxed atmosphere where you will participate in everyday activities in your chosen language, just as you would if you were living in a foreign country. From morning to night, your native-speaking instructors and assistants will help you with vocabulary, grammar, listening and pronunciation, and you will also go on excursions, play games, sing, prepare authentic meals, enjoy cultural presentations and perhaps make a presentation of your own. Two years of previous language study is recommended, or the ability to speak about simple, everyday subjects in the present and past tenses.

Teachers will find material useful in the classroom and a valuable refresher of speaking skills. Stories, drama, music, film, food and native-speaking friends will provide for a deep immersion into the language and culture.

The immersion runs from 5 pm Friday through 2 pm Sunday and
includes instruction, all activities and materials, and six meals from Friday dinner through Sunday lunch.

Accommodation is off-site at local inns within-in walking distance of School: shared or single rooms. Please inquire for pricing. It is possible to register for just Saturday of a weekend immersion, at the discretion of the instructor. The day begins at breakfast, and Saturday students are welcome through dinner and evening activities: 8:30 am-9 pm: $108.

Giovanni Perlini, Penobscot School’s Italian Exchange Teacher for 2007-2008, was born in 1967 in Milan in northern Italy, and received his degree in History.   He comes to us via a former FLTA, Giovanna, so he is already a bit familiar with our school He has traveled extensively and has a good knowledge not only of English, but also of French and German, and some Russian.  While working in a school library, he was involved in theater and acting, even contributing to a dictionary of the performing arts.  He loves film and is passionately interested in politics and historical and cultural issues of today’s world, with a view to becoming a journalist.  To this end, he is excited about the possibilities of teaching his own language and culture to Americans, while improving his English, and becoming involved in the school setting in Rockland, learning first hand about the social environment here in Maine.
