The Students:
Each session at Penobscot School attracts a diverse group of adults who
want to improve their English skills and participate in the life of an
American community in a spirit of cultural exchange. Participants have
ranged in age from 21 to 65 (the average age is 35), have come from 49
different countries, and have included actors, architects, artists, business-people,
contractors, diplomats, doctors and nurses, engineers, geologists, journalists,
lawyers, social workers, teachers, university students and professors,
and many others.
The course is conducted entirely in English, so it is
only for those who have studied English for at least a year and who
have some basic English skills. The course is not for beginners, and
it is not for the most advanced students.
The students who are able to benefit the most from the
course are at an intermediate English level: able to communicate in
a simple way, but needing to build confidence and to practice their
English communication skills. In the stimulating environment of the
English immersion program, these students often take a big step forward
in listening comprehension and speaking fluency.
If you have learned some basic English grammar and vocabulary,
but you are not yet able to express yourself comfortably and fluently,
if you would like to be able to relax and enjoy the exchange of ideas
and knowledge in an English conversation, the summer English immersion
course at Penobscot School is for you.
