Welcome to Midcoast Maine! Real people... Real places...The Real Maine If you're looking for the authentic Maine experience, this is it. The Rockland-Thomaston area is the entry point to Penobscot Bay, perhaps the most scenic body of water on the eastern seaboard.

The Farnsworth Museum has a large collection of American art in their elegant building in the center of Rockland.

The Owls Head Transportation Museum at the airport just outside of Rockland has a magnificent collection of antique automobiles and airplanes, most of them in working condition.

The Samoset Resort is one of America's premier resort hotels. Penobscot School summer English students have guest privileges at the health club. The Samoset Resort generously provided the food for our school's August 2005 International Student Welcome Reception, which was co-hosted by the Rockland-Thomaston Area Chamber of Commerce and City of Rockland.

The Maine Photographic Workshop in the neighboring town of Rockport offers short courses in photography and video production.

The North End Shipyard, just a five minute walk from Penobscot School, offers 1, 3 and 6 day sailing cruises on the schooners Heritage, Isaac Evans, American Eagle, and Wendameen.

Just 400 meters from the school is the Maine State Ferry Terminal which serves the islands of Vinalhaven and North Haven with regular ferry service. Weekend visits to these beautiful islands are popular with Penobscot School students.

And for a Maine-based foreign-affairs site, visit the Midcoast Exchange.

Waterman House and Gardens is a quiet Bed and Breakfast located in the center of Rockland ’s historic district. Built in the 1890's, the three-story mansion provides an elegant hide-away for vacation or business travelers throughout the year. The property is just a few blocks away from Penobscot School, within walking distance of both the school and all the delights of downtown Rockland. The B&B is run by a mother/daughter team and long-term accommodations can be arranged.

Of course this is only a small sample of the many things to do and see in and around Rockland. Most places don't have Web pages! For links to other places that do have information on the Web, and for a description of same places that don't, try the Maine Tourism site on the state government server and the Recreation in the Rockland Area site that is privately maintained.
